Here’s how the Nets fit in with all the NBA trade rumors this time around
NBA trade rumors are picking up, which means it’s time to re-evaluate where the Nets stand this offseason.
To understand where the Nets are, though, it’s important to remember who else to take into account before any evaluations are made.
AN ANTETOKOUNMPO IN MILWAUKEE
Two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, a free agent after next season, has given no indication whether he’ll sign a contract extension in Milwaukee in the coming weeks.
The Bucks will offer Antetokounmpo a supermax contract once they are legally allowed to do so (at the beginning of free agency). Antetokounmpo can either accept it or wait until he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
The Bucks, of course, don’t want to wait that long.
If Milwaukee fails to make the NBA Finals next year behind a third MVP-caliber season from Antetokounmpo, the Bucks could risk losing their star for nothing if he leaves in free agency. Milwaukee could opt to trade Antetokounmpo before the deadline if their faith in him re-signing weakens.

So far, Bucks management has insisted the franchise will not deal its superstar forward if he declines to accept the supermax contract extension this offseason.
The Nets have not been tied to Antetokounmpo, but they have the young players and future draft assets to make a compelling offer. The Warriors and Heat remain frontrunners to pull off a deal for Antetokounmpo should he become available for trade.
A Bradley Beal trade looks less likely this season, but could be revisited next year if the Wizards fail to make the playoffs once again.
Beal’s two-year extension is up in 2022 and he can become a free agent.
He averaged 30.5 points per game this season but was snubbed from both the All-Star team and the All-NBA team as the Wizards finished with a 25-47 record, missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
“I’m a loyal guy. I want to be here. I’m here. I’ve signed my extension,” Beal said on Friday. “That would mean the world to me, being able to finish your career in one place. You don’t see that in today’s game. That would definitely be an honor, but my ultimate goal is to win.
“I want to win, and we’ve got to win, and I know we can win,” Beal continued. “I know this is a place where we can win, I know this is a place where we can get guys to come here and win.”
The Wizards project to improve once John Wall — the All-Star point guard who did not play at all this season and played in only 73 of a possible 164 games the prior two years — returns from injury.

The Daily News reported in May that the Nets held internal discussions about acquiring Beal via trade.
“It’s not the first time I’ve heard this kind of talk,” Beal told ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan. “It’s interesting. To me, I look at it as a sign of respect, that I’ve been doing good things and guys want to play with me.
Victor Oladipo is reportedly seeking a max deal despite playing in just 55 total games over the past two seasons.
Oladipo had a breakout 2017-18 season in Indiana, averaging 23 points per game and morphing into one of the NBA’s premier two-way wings. He ruptured his quadriceps the following season and has been on the long road to recovery.
The Miami Heat have interest, but Oladipo’s interest in Miami may be stronger than Miami’s interest in him, according to reports.
If the Nets are looking to add a third star and strike out on both Antetokounmpo and Beal, Oladipo wouldn’t be an awful consolation prize. So long as he can stay healthy, Oladipo is a perennial two-way All-Star who can bolster any team’s back court.
Zach LaVine’s name will continue to swirl in trade rumors as the Bulls look to improve their draft standing.
LaVine is one of a small number of players who have been linked as trade candidates to the Nets. Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett even told the Daily News back in September that they should pull off a deal for him.
Other potential stars to monitor include Cavaliers forward Kevin Love, Magic forward Aaron Gordon. The Nets are in need of a four, but the prevailing belief is they will trade or sign a forward this offseason that is more of a force on the defensive end.
That brings us to Brooklyn, where the stars have aligned atop Barclays Center. The Nets signed Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant last summer, and by mid-January, Irving declared they needed one “or two more pieces” to become a championship contender.
“I mean, it’s transparent,” Irving said on Jan. 16. “It’s out there. It’s glaring, in terms of the pieces that we need in order to be at that next level.
“Collectively, I feel like we have great pieces,” Irving continued, “but it’s pretty glaring we need one more piece or two more pieces that will complement myself, [Kevin Durant], [DeAndre Jordan], [Garrett Temple], Spence [Dinwiddie], Caris [LeVert], and we’ll see how that evolves.”
Pieces can be stars. They can also be role players, like a versatile stretch four, or a backup point guard.
Any deal for a true star player begins and ends with LeVert. It’s a tip of the hat to the Nets’ budding star who has become a premier impact player after averaging 18.7 points per game this season, including 25 points per game in Orlando bubble seeding games and about 20 points per game in the playoffs.

A deal for a player of Antetokounmpo’s or Beal’s stature would also likely include Dinwiddie and Jarrett Allen.
The Nets have the re-tool package. They have three young, budding players ready to start and make an immediate impact. They also have draft assets — though none project to be as attractive as this year’s, which include the No. 19 pick from the 76ers via the Clippers. The Nets’ 2024 first-round pick could also be appealing, but that’ll be one season after Irving and Durant’s contracts expire.
For what it’s worth, Durant straight-up said he believes LeVert can be the Nets’ third star.
“For sure,” he said in September on the Old Man & The Three podcast. “I think Caris is that perfect guy for us to, any given night he can lead us in scoring or lead us in assists or he can control the offense or we can go to him in the post in a matchup. I feel like he has the tools to do everything on the basketball court. On our team, we play unselfishly, and we’ve got guys that can play off the basketball so on any given night anybody can be the star.”
Again, this assumes the Nets actually want to trade for a star. Irving said the Nets need another piece or two, and that much is undeniable. One of those pieces is Durant, a walking 30 points per game who is expected to return from Achilles rehab next season.
The other piece may not need to be a star at all. If LeVert is the talent Durant believes he can be — the talent who shined bright in the Orlando bubble this season — this Nets’ offseason may not be as explosive as the last.
