Packers should trade for Texans receiver Will Fuller before deadline

Before the trade deadline, the Green Bay Packers should be actively searching for help on either side of the ball.

When it comes to the offense, bringing in a difference-maker at wide receiver could help this group level up, as hard as that may seem considering how well they’ve been playing this season.

If the Houston Texans are willing to trade Will Fuller, it will be hard to find a better opportunity than this to add a great receiver midway through the season.

According to Aaron Reiss of The Athletic, the Packers have inquired about Fuller, although he adds there is “no deal imminent”.

There’s good reason for the Packers to have interest in Fuller. He’s a talented, explosive wide receiver who could help this offense in a big way. A first-round pick in 2016, Fuller could be exactly what this offense needs.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling is the Packers’ best deep threat and we’ve seen him make a couple of big receptions this season. However, MVS has been inconsistent now for almost 1.5 seasons under Matt LaFleur and he hasn’t made the jump many predicted so far this year.

Fuller would give the Packers another great deep threat. He ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at the combine, and he’s averaging 14.6 yards per reception in his career. In his career, Fuller has caught 21 touchdowns, nine of which have been distances of 30-plus yards.

Fuller is also playing some of the best football of his career. After seven games, he’s caught 31 passes for 490 yards and five touchdowns. He’s on pace for his first 1,000-yard season and is averaging a career-best 15.8 yards per catch.

Now imagine him in LaFleur’s offense.

For starters, Davante Adams draws the most attention from opposing defenses. Aaron Jones is also a key part of opponents’ game plans. Now they’d have to deal with Fuller, a perfect complement to Adams who has the ability to burn defenses deep downfield. LaFleur could find creative ways to get Fuller involved and stretch defenses.

Once Allen Lazard returns from injury, the Packers would have a deep receiving group. Adams, Fuller, and Lazard would be a tremendous top three, and then with Robert Tonyan, MVS, Jones, and Jamaal Williams also catching passes, the Packers would be loaded on offense.

For a trade to happen, the contract also needs to make sense.

Fuller is on the final year of his deal and currently has a cap hit of just over $10 million, according to Over The Cap. The fact the Packers wouldn’t have to commit to a deal beyond this season only adds another reason to make a trade.

While a deal might not be “imminent”, if a trade is there to be made, the Packers should get it done. Matt LaFleur loves him, Fuller could strengthen this offense, and his contract would be affordable.

NFL Trade Block Big Board Entering Week 8

NFL Trade Block Big Board Entering Week 8

0 of 11

Winslow Townson/Associated Press

We’re entering the final full week before the 2020 NFL trade deadline. After 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, teams will no longer be allowed to conduct in-season deals. There could be a flurry of activity over the next few days as franchises look to sell off assets and/or bring in reinforcements for the stretch run.

Twelve teams own at least five wins while seven teams have one or fewer, so there should be a fair bit of action on both ends of the spectrum.

Who are the top players likely to be available at the deadline? That’s what we’ll determine, using factors such as roster makeup, cap space and the likelihood of player movement to guide us.

1 of 11

Zach Bolinger/Associated Press

To get our top 10, we first determined 15 likely trade candidates based on prior speculation and common sense. Losing teams like the 0-7 New York Jets, for example, could look to dump salaries and gain draft picks before the deadline.

We have a couple of additions to the list as teams begin to make players available.

Albert Breer of The MMQB reported that the Cincinnati Bengals have defensive end Carlos Dunlap on the trading block. Breer also said on Patriots Pregame Live that the New England Patriots have discussed dealing cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

To make room for these three, we’re removing Odell Beckham Jr. and Haason Reddick. Beckham suffered a torn ACL on Sunday and is out for the season. At 5-2, the Arizona Cardinals are contenders and shouldn’t be looking to move contributors like Reddick.

The new initial list, in no particular order, is as follows:

  • Chris Herndon, TE, New York Jets
  • A.J. Green, WR, Cincinnati Bengals
  • David Johnson, RB, Houston Texans
  • Stephon Gilmore, CB, New England Patriots
  • Dwayne Haskins Jr., QB, Washington Football Team
  • Alshon Jeffery, WR, Philadelphia Eagles
  • Ryan Kerrigan, Edge, Washington Football Team
  • Jacoby Brissett, QB, Indianapolis Colts
  • DaeSean Hamilton, WR, Denver Broncos
  • Denzel Perryman, LB, Los Angeles Chargers
  • Kenny Stills, WR, Houston Texans
  • Carlos Dunlap, DE, Cincinnati Bengals
  • Trent Murphy, Edge, Buffalo Bills
  • Vic Beasley Jr., Edge, Tennessee Titans
  • Golden Tate, WR, New York Giants

New York Jets tight end Chris Herndon might not jump out as a prime trade-deadline target—at least based on this season. He has caught just 13 of 23 targets for 98 yards and has been credited with three dropped passes.

“A lot of it is just self-inflicted,” Herndon said, per Brian Costello of the New York Post,

However, Herndon possesses a ton of physical upside, which he flashed two years ago as a rookie—he was limited to one game by injury and suspension last season. In 2018. Herndon caught 39 passes for 502 yards and two touchdowns.

Teams looking to add depth with a pass-catching tight end should show some interest in Herndon.

The Jets, who are barreling toward the No. 1 in the 2021 draft, should view very few players as off-limits before the deadline. Herndon isn’t one of them. If a team Herndon, it can likely have him.

New York Giants wide receiver Golden Tate finally got into the end zone in Week 7. His 39-yard touchdown reception helped the Giants build an 11-point lead that they ultimately blew. It’s unlikely that he’s going to become a big part of the offensive game plan, though.

Tate has caught just one pass in each of his last two games and has been targeted three times in that span.

The Giants are going nowhere, even in the pitiful NFC East, so Tate should be available for the right price.

He could benefit a team in the playoff mix. He’s not going to be a top option, but he has been a productive complementary receiver in the past. Just last season—his first with the Giants—he caught 49 passes for 676 yards and six touchdowns.

Eric Christian Smith/Associated Press

The Houston Texans suffered their sixth loss of the season Sunday, and as they slip further away from contention, they’re more likely to consider dealing valuable pieces. As of now, Houston will enter the 2021 draft without a first- or second-round draft pick.

One would have to think running back David Johnson could be available for the right price. He’s been serviceable since being acquired as part of the DeAndre Hopkins trade, but he hasn’t been a bell-cow back.

While Johnson has 553 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns, he’s averaging just 3.9 yards per carry. The Texans could look to get out from under the last season and a half of his three-year, $39 million contract if a running back-needy team comes calling with a fair offer.

While a team that deals for Johnson wouldn’t be getting a workhorse No. 1 back, it could add a fine complementary piece for the stretch run—like the Kansas City Chiefs just did by signing Le’Veon Bell.

The Washington Football Team appears to be done with 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins Jr. The former Ohio State star has been out of the starting lineup the past three weeks and hasn’t even been active on game days.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported two weeks ago that teams around the league believe he could be dealt before the deadline. While this is likely still the case, Haskins remains low in our rankings for one big reason.

While the quarterback position is the NFL’s most important, Haskins has shown little to suggest he can contribute right away. This means he isn’t a viable option for teams like Dallas that need quarterback help right now—not that Washington would be likely to help the Cowboys.

However, Haskins could still have a lot of value for a franchise that is looking to develop a young signal-caller for the future. The allure of the unknown will probably cause at least one team to kick the tires on Haskins at the deadline.

6 of 11

Chris Szagola/Associated Press

According to Breer, Eagles wideout Alshon Jeffery is “very clearly available,” and teams have reason to be interested at the deadline.

While not a true No. 1 option, Jeffery can be a valuable possession receiver, as he has been in the past. He had 65 catches for 843 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games in 2018. If Jeffery can be obtained for little trade capital, he could be an ideal target for a receiver-needy contender.

The fact that Antonio Brown is off the market should only increase the value of wideouts like Jeffery.

However, he isn’t higher on this list for two reasons. For one, he still isn’t back to 100 percent from his foot injury and hasn’t suited up in 2020. As well, he’s saddled with an unfavorable contract that carries an $18.5 million cap hit next season.

Even if a team doesn’t give up much to acquire Jeffery, he isn’t going to be cheap.

Eric Christian Smith/Associated Press

As previously mentioned, the 1-6 Houston Texans could be close to having a fire sale. One of the first pieces up for bid should be wide receiver Kenny Stills. A talented complementary receiver in the right situation, Stills has largely been an afterthought this season.

Stills has been targeted just 18 times and has 10 catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. There’s virtually no reason for the Texans to be high on keeping him in the final year of his contract.

Any reasonable offer should be enough to get Stills out of Houston.

A team that acquires him would be getting a solid role player. His lack of production this year is about a lack of opportunities and not a lack of talent. Just last season, Stills had 40 catches, 561 yards and four touchdowns while playing alongside DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller V.

Aaron Doster/Associated Press

The Bengals appear willing to move on from edge-rusher Carlos Dunlap. Dunlap appears to want out—he briefly appeared to be offering up his Cincinnati-area home—which could make him a bargain-bin option at the deadline.

Teams aren’t going to offer much for a player when a team is already willing to break ties.

If Dunlap can be had on the cheap, he could be one of the best pickups of midseason. He’s played less than 60 percent of the defensive snaps this season and hasn’t been highly productive, but he’s traditionally been one of the more consistent edge-defenders in the NFL.

Dunlap had nine sacks last season and has averaged just over eight sacks over the last four years. He should add an instant boost to any contender that needs a situational pass-rusher.

Guys who can pressure the quarterback are always going to be valuable, which is why Dunlap is in the top half of our power rankings despite being a new addition.

*Update: The Bengals are trading Dunlap to the Seattle Seahawks, according to NFL Medias Ian Rapoport.

While Dwayne Haskins Jr. wouldn’t have much value to a team that needs a quarterback right now. Indianapolis Colts backup Jacoby Brissett could. Brissett has 32 career starts and helped Indianapolis reach 7-9 last season.

For a team like the Cowboys—who are down two signal-callers and playing in a weak division—a 7-9 quarterback could be an ideal target. He would instantly be a more experienced option than either Ben DiNucci or Garrett Gilbert, Dallas’ two healthy quarterbacks.

Brissett should be a top target for any other team if its starter gets hurt between now and Nov. 3. He should also be available if a team is willing to offer something of value.

Brissett is firmly entrenched behind starter Philip Rivers, and he’s in the final year of his contract. Indianapolis could be happy to dump some salary and get something in return if it can unload Brissett for a fair price.

Daniel Kucin Jr./Associated Press

When Washington picked up its second win of the season Sunday, it reentered the NFC East divisional race. However, there’s still reason to believe edge-rusher Ryan Kerrigan will be available at the deadline. He’s 32 years old and in the final year of his contract, and Washington could be eager to add to its 2021 draft haul.

If so, Kerrigan could be one of the best values available.

“A perfect stretch-run add for a contender,” NBC Sports’ Peter King wrote of Kerrigan.

Kerrigan had another sack against the Cowboys on Sunday, bringing his season total to four despite playing just 36 percent of the defensive snaps. He could potentially put up Pro Bowl numbers with a bigger role on a contender.

Charles Krupa/Associated Press

There should be no shortage of playoff-caliber teams looking for secondary help, which is why Stephon Gilmore tops this list. While he hasn’t been spectacular in 2020—he has only two passes defended and one interception—he’s still a No. 1 corner and the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

Were the Patriots built to make a deep playoff run this season, they almost certainly wouldn’t consider dealing Gilmore. But at 2-4, they might be a long shot even to earn a wild-card berth.

The Patriots likely could get a significant haul for Gilmore while also clearing the last year-and-a-half of his five-year, $65 million contract off their books. They had conversations about trading him as recently as August, according to Albert Breer of The MMQB (via Justin Leger of NBC Sports Boston).

While Gilmore is set to carry a cap hit of roughly $17.2 million next season, an interested team wouldn’t be trading for an albatross of a deal. His cap hit in 2021 isn’t much more than what Xavien Howard and Tre’Davious White are making annually.

Any team acquiring Gilmore would get an elite defensive piece for the stretch run and a No. 1-caliber corner at a pricey-but-not-overpriced salary in 2021.

The 2020 NFL Trade Deadline is approaching on Nov. 3. The league has already seen a few trade offers accepted but more are on the horizon. CBS Sports is tracking all of the news and rumors and providing a one-stop shop for readers. The most recent updates will be located at the top.

The Seahawks acquired disgruntled edge rusher Carlos Dunlap from Cincinnati Wednesday in exchange for offensive lineman B.J. Finney and a 2021 seventh-round draft pick, according to SI.com’s Albert Breer. Dunlap has vocalized his unhappiness by posting the team’s defensive rotations and promoting the sale of his home on Twitter and more. Dunlap has 18 tackles, one sack and two pass deflections this season.

The Bengals may not be done at the deadline. There are a few other veterans that could be on the move. There is more on that story below. ESPN’s Adam Caplan also notes that the Seahawks may not be done acquiring pass rush help.

CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker mocked up ten trades that could help contenders make a Super Bowl run. Is it possible that the Patriots could be buyers and sellers ahead of the Nov. 3 deadline? Walker has the Patriots moving a big-time player while also adding a brand name wide receiver.

Not every team is a contender though and the deadline could still be interesting for lower-tier teams. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin explored one trade that each team should make in the coming days.

It did not take long for Dallas to find a viable suitor for edge rusher Everson Griffen. On Tuesday, it was learned that Detroit was acquiring the former Viking in exchange for a conditional 2021 sixth-round draft pick. He is due to receive roughly half of his $6 million salary from the Lions. League COVID-19 protocols prevent Griffen from playing this weekend so his first action with his new team will come Nov. 8 against … Minnesota.

Miami has turned the keys to the castle over to rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa but that does not mean the AFC East contender is prepared to give up on their season nor recently demoted second string quarterback. Head coach Brian Flores states that the team has no intention of trading Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The veteran led the Dolphins to a 3-3 record and second place within the division.

The CBS Sports team has been compiling needs for multiple teams across the NFL. Rather than reading a generic list of players available, indulge in a more team-centric approach:

                                                                                                                                                    Cleveland Browns
                                                                                                                                                    Las Vegas Raiders
                                                                                                                                                    New England Patriots
                                                                                                                                                    New York Giants
                                                                                                                                                    Philadelphia Eagles
                                                                                                                                                    Washington Football Team

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin constructed a position-by-position list of 75 players that could be on the move ahead of the Nov. 3 trade deadline. Some of the notable names include Saints quarterback Jameis Winston, Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green, Texans edge rusher J.J. Watt and Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore. CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker confirmed that Griffen and Poe have been made available to other teams in a potential trade scenario. Griffen signed a one-year, $6 million deal with Dallas prior to the season and would be owed roughly half. CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan notes that the 32-year-old has played 56.43% of Dallas’ defensive snaps and totaled 20 tackles, six quarterback hits, and 2.5 sacks. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin laid out five potential destinations for Griffen with Seattle being the most likely.

Poe signed a two-year deal worth $8.5 million, but there is a reasonable out in the contract after this season. It is less likely that he is moved at the deadline.

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin proposed ten trades that would be win-win situations for both teams involved. What would A.J. Green look like on the Packers? It may not cost as much as you might think. Read the explanation behind that trade:

“At this point, why shouldn’t Green Bay take a swing, even if it eventually means losing Green in 2021 free agency and hoping for a compensatory pick? Aaron Rodgers has done very well operating with just Davante Adams and/or Allen Lazard, but with the latter hurt and No. 12 clearly positioned to take the Packers on another run, he deserves the gamble,” Benjamin wrote.

The Texans are off to an unexpected 1-6 start to the season. Bill O’Brien has been fired in favor of veteran coach Romeo Crennel. Crennel, who likely has little authority over personnel decisions as an interim head coach, attempted to reassure his players that they will not be traded.

“So, with this situation the way it is, I think that it might be more on their mind this year than it would be any other year. I’ve talked to them and tried to reassure them that I’m not looking to trade guys, but human nature is human nature.”

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora believes it is time for a fire sale in Houston. The team has struggled with the likes of edge rusher Whitney Mercilus, J.J. Watt and others. If the team is going to be bad anyway, they might as well re-coup some of the picks flushed down the drain by O’Brien.

There has been no mincing of words in regard to Dunlap’s frustration. He has posted the team’s edge rush rotations on social media and is now attempting to sell his house on Twitter. The message is clear: trade me. CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr wrote about the veteran’s frustration upon being demoted.

In addition to Dunlap, defensive tackle Geno Atkins, wide receiver A.J. Green, wide receiver John Ross and cornerback William Jackson could also be on the move. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin explored potential destinations for each of the disgruntled AFC North talents. The Bills were a staple.

Atlanta has already pressed the reset button on their leadership structure with head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff being shown the door. The mindset will not trickle down to the players, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who notes that the team has no intention of trading Ryan or Jones.

The Falcons have gone 25-30 since that fateful 28-3 collapse against the Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

New England drafted N’Keal Harry in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft and traded a second round pick for Mohamed Sanu. Neither has been the answer that the team had hoped. The Patriots are still alive within the AFC East but the outlook grows more bleak with each passing week. The team’s upcoming game against Buffalo could determine whether they are buyers or sellers by Nov. 3. As it stands, Bill Belichick is exploring options on the wide receiver trade market, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora. Two of the team’s top five receptions leaders are running backs. Draft tight ends Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene have a combined one reception.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora has reported that the Texans are a popular team in trade conversations. The organization’s sluggish start and obvious eyes to the future have potential playoff contenders scouring their roster. La Canfora states rival executives believe Houston will trade at least one receiver, Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks and Kenny Stills, by the deadline. They are also gauging the market on edge rusher Whitney Mercilus, who has three years left on a four-year, $54 million deal signed in May of 2015.

Running back Duke Johnson and tight end Darren Fells are other names that have drawn consideration.

Minnesota has made a series of poor salary cap decisions leading up to the ultimate errors: re-signing Anthony Barr after he attempted to leave for New York and doubling down on Kirk Cousins. Now, they find themselves in a position to discard players because their season has not gone as expected and they are up against the salary cap wall.

The team has already traded edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue but more moves could be on the way. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora had the following to say about the team’s activity: “Multiple executives who have been in contact with the Vikings believe the team is eager to move several more high-priced veterans who likely do not fit into the team’s long-term plans.”

The names most often mentioned are safety Harrison Smith, left tackle Riley Reiff, safety Anthony Harris, tight end Kyle Rudolph and wide receiver Adam Thielen.

Defensive tackle Geno Atkins, cornerback William Jackson, wide receiver A.J. Green, wide receiver John Ross and edge rusher Carlos Dunlap have all made it clear that they are open to a change of scenery, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora. The Bengals were very unwilling to trade veterans last season — an absolute mistake, says the writer continually beating a dead horse — but La Canfora notes that NFL executives are “detecting a vibe that is not quite as trade-averse” in Cincinnati.

On Oct. 23, the Giants agreed to trade outside linebacker Markus Golden to the Cardinals in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick. Golden, who actually began his career in Arizona, had just 1.5 sacks in seven games with the Giants this season. It was a priority to bolster the pass rush following the loss of Chandler Jones for the season.

Philadelphia and Julie Ertz’s husband have been at odds over his contract for some time. The matters were only exacerbated by new deals for Travis Kelce and George Kittle this offseason. Ertz was recently placed on injured reserve, which means that he can not be traded. SI’s Albert Breer reported that the team attempted to trade the player before placing him on said IR. Prior to the injury, he had recorded 24 receptions for 178 yards and one touchdown.

Breer added that wide receiver Alshon Jeffery is also on the trade block, but it is difficult to fathom anyone would want to take on that contract in relation to his limited production.

Less than two months after acquiring the pass rusher from Jacksonville, Minnesota shipped Yannick Ngakoue to the east coast in exchange for a package of draft picks less than they initially traded to the Jaguars. The Maryland native, who has recorded five sacks this season, is headed home in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 fifth-round pick.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta hinted that the Ravens may not be done making moves. The acquisition of Ngakoue is clearly a move to slow down Patrick Mahomes, who is sometimes flustered by heavy pass rush, and the Chiefs offense. CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker graded the trade acknowledging that Baltimore fleeced their trade partner.

New York traded Willis and a 2021 seventh-round pick to the 49ers in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick. The capital gain is marginal at best but general manager Joe Douglas is cleaning house in the Big Apple. I explored some of the other Jets players that could find interest in their services at the trade deadline.

The Jets sent the defensive tackle and a 2023 seventh-round pick to the Buccaneers in exchange for a 2022 sixth-round pick. Tampa Bay had recently lost Vita Vea to an injury for the season.

It was later revealed that McLendon played for the Jets after finding out about his trade to the Buccaneers. A car was waiting for him after the game and he immediately drove to Tampa.
