COVID-19 has changed the way many Virginians live, work and access the health care system. Mask-wearing, hand-washing and social distancing have become the norm for many of us, both in our personal lives and at the workplace.
With more than half of Americans obtaining health care benefits through an employer, businesses are in a unique position to help employees maintain or enhance their well-being during these challenging times.

One important trend amid COVID-19 has been the adoption of virtual care to help people access medical services and advice. While virtual care has been available to some people for several years, COVID-19 has helped encourage its adoption. Many medical practices have gone digital for making and confirming appointments and are also enabling more patients to virtually access urgent and ongoing care, including medical advice from behavioral health specialists and physical, occupational and speech therapists.
The possible benefits of virtual care — convenience, affordability and the opportunity to reduce the potential risk of exposure to COVID-19 connected with in-person trips to health care facilities — may be creating a new normal for how many patients access various types of care.
With the annual open enrollment season to select health benefits for next year now in full swing, survey results from the National Business Group on Health highlight how more than half of companies identify virtual solutions as a top health priority. Another UnitedHealthcare survey found that 56% of respondents are interested in using virtual care resources in the future.
How can employers help maximize the value of virtual care? Here are strategies to consider:
Start or expand access. Most large employers offer at least some type of virtual care benefit to their employees, so it may be helpful to enhance employee awareness of this technology. Company and human resources leaders should continue to evaluate the virtual care options currently available to employees through their health plan, local care providers or other telehealth service providers.
To help make these resources more convenient, some options give employees 24/7 access to virtual visits that, while unable to diagnose or treat COVID-19, may provide medical advice related to this condition (including guidance for in-person testing and treatment, if needed) and other health issues such as allergies, rashes or flu.
Consistently communicate. Consider creating consistent — and customized — communication strategies that encourage the adoption of virtual care resources, especially as they relate to COVID-19 and the management of certain chronic conditions. To help encourage employees to use virtual care resources, some employers send out welcome kits, monthly email reminders and direct-mail materials that highlight the potential convenience, flexibility (24/7 or scheduled appointments) and affordability of telehealth options.
Offer incentives. To prompt interest in virtual care, some employees may need no motivation beyond the desire of wanting to help maintain or improve their health and avoid disease. Meanwhile, other employees may need an incentive, such as a financial reward, to jump-start their interest in using virtual care. For example, some employers may consider offering $5 prepaid gift cards to employees for completing a virtual visit registration. According to one study, that small incentive helped generate a 40% increase in sign-ups compared with a control group.
Add virtual wellness programs. Besides virtual care, employers may consider adding or expanding digital wellness programs, including those designed to help employees prevent or better manage certain chronic conditions such as diabetes or obesity, two risk factors for complications associated with COVID-19.
Companies may consider providing virtual programs that give employees online weight loss and exercise support, which may help motivate staff to get active. What’s more, employers can implement telephonic programs that connect people with licensed counselors to help address various issues, including family and marriage difficulties, alcohol or substance misuse, and depression or stress.
The availability of virtual resources may encourage healthier and more productive employees, potentially helping address the recent decline in preventive services. It may also support people to better manage certain chronic conditions — all while helping reduce missed time from work.
At the same time, telehealth may help curb health care costs by enabling people to access more cost-effective care and avoid potentially riskier in-person health care settings amid COVID-19.
