How stock-market sectors have reacted to bullish coronavirus vaccine news

Here’s a chart that best illustrates how sensitive the market has been to vaccine news by sector. The stock market has been very sensitive to updates on coronavirus remedies and treatments in this pandemic era.

The best example of that was Monday’s euphoric trading that saw seismic moves play out across the market as investors attempted to rejigger their portfolios.

As it illustrates, the energy and materials sectors, which have significantly lagged behind the broader market, both saw the most excess positive returns to the news on Monday.

As Goldman’s chart also notes, consumer discretionary, down 1.3%, information tech, off 0.3%, and communication services were the only sectors not seeing a substantial weekly rise.

To be sure, Wednesday’s rebound in tech and tech-related names, which helped trim the Nasdaq Composite’s weekly drop, may signify that the run-up in so-called beaten-down value assets may have been overdone.

SHOW CAPTION

We last showed this chart on Sept. 9, having data through August, and folks have since been itching to know what happened during September and October. As requested, here are the single-family residence sales activity and trends over the past five years, by month sold (closed).

Takeaways: County-wide sale quantities spiked from July through October 2020 (so much that I had to change the vertical axis range), compared to past years, while median speeds from listing to contract (days to contract or DTC) collapsed to an eye-blink of only 10-15 days (remember it often takes another 30-45 days to get through due diligence and to actual closing). Many were pondering October numbers, and whether such would halt the spikes in quantity or slow the speed of going under contract. In a word, “nope.”

SOCAR Trading’s Investments in Digitization Generate Strong Financial Performance

GENEVA, Switzerland, Nov. 11, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — SOCAR Trading Head of IT, Movsum Muslumzada, told the Reuters Commodity Trading Summit that, having upgraded its IT systems just prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, the trading company was able to quickly implement remote working without any operational interruptions.

Speaking at a Reuters conference session on Overcoming Barriers to the Digitization of Commodities Trading, Mr. Muslumzada explained: “Moving to the cloud in 2019 was a game-changer for SOCAR Trading. When COVID-19 unexpectedly arrived in 2020, we were ready and had prepared our infrastructure so that people could work from any place on the planet. [Our digitized IT systems] helped a lot with communications and financially we had a good year.”

Mr. Muslumzada also called for the trading industry to adopt a general protocol and standards so that counterparties can exchange trading data and operational data.

According to Mr. Muslumzada, trust in technology is key. He continued, “Managers and decision-makers need to understand what technology tools are available, and to know how to use them and trust them. Five or six years ago, everybody was afraid of the cloud as it placed your data under somebody else’s control. Now, it’s becoming mainstream. So education is necessary.”

In recent months, SOCAR Trading has invested considerable time and resources in sophisticated IT systems, and digitized internal control frameworks have given the company the agility and the confidence to merit its status as one of the most successful global energy trading companies.
